The 2024 Folly Prize

The Folly Prize launched in 2023 with fierce competition from an incredible array of edgy, off the wall, sexy, fun writing submitted by talented writers from around the globe.

The 2024 Folly Prize runs from 15 January - 30 April 2024, with a cash first prize of $1000 NZD. The Prizewinner and Runner Ups will be published in Issue 2 of Folly, due to be launched in late October 2024.

We encourage entries from writers from around the world, and are specifically looking for work that is accessible (fun), yet well written. Pacey, provocative, honest and light. If your writing includes lingering landscapes and a down beat plot, best send it elsewhere. We encourage all submitters to read a copy of Issue 1 of Folly prior to submitting.

Submissions are via our Submittable portal, found on the Submissions page.

Our 2023 Prizewinner.

George Titheridge.

"I'm Obsessed with You”

Berlin Based New Zealander George Titheridge took out the 2023 prize with their brilliant short story "I'm Obsessed with You.”

George’s story mesmerized our judges with its fantastic voice and pacey vignette of a toxic relationship, filled with cutting dialogue and choke in your coffee hilarity.

In the words of ReadingRoom’s editor Steve Braunias: “Sexy: tick (The female protagonist is brought to orgasm eight times by her partner: "He counted.") Fresh, funny, joyful, unaffected: tick. I absolutely loved it.”

Congratulations George!

“I actually wrote this story in the bath. When I am stressed, I have excessive baths and feel totally relaxed. So I wrote this on my phone, chilling there.”
